XU rifle team 2nd

For the second time in four years, the Xavier rifle team finished second behind Alaska-Fairbanks in the NCAA Championship at West Point, N.Y. UAF won its fifth straight title.

The Nanooks fired a combined score of 6287, the Muskies 6197. Xavier shot a 4645 in smallbore and a 1552 in air rifle, finishing second to UAF in both disciplines.

This is the fourth year in a row Xavier has finished in the top four.

Sophomore Hannah Kerr, fourth in the individual smallbore, paced XU. She fired a combined score of 1566 - 1178 in smallbore and 388 in air rifle.

Senior Thrine Kane, a 2000 Olympian, fired a team-high 390 in air rifle and 1167 in smallbore to finish with a combined 1557.

Freshmen Rich Gauvin and Alice Reed rounded out Xavier's smallbore scoring with an 1162 and an 1138, respectively. Another pair of freshmen scored in air rifle for Xavier. Brandon Czekaj finished with a 390 and Whitney Prather fired a 384.

Xavier coach Alan Joseph shared CRCA Coach of the Year honors with Glenn Dubis of UAF and Fred Harvey of Nevada. Joseph also won a share of the CRCA Coach of the Year honor in 2000.
