West gets first postseason honor

Enquirer news services

Xavier's David West won the first of several possible postseason awards Tuesday when the U.S. Basketball Writers Association named him the District V Player of the Year. West beat out players from Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin for the honor.

Included in that group is National Player of the Year candidate Dwyane Wade, who was named to the All-District team along with West and Ohio's Brandon Hunter, a Withrow High graduate.

West is expected to be named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year tonight at the conference's annual postseason reception.

Wake Forest coach and former Xavier coach Skip Prosser was named the District III Coach of the Year after leading the Demon Deacons to the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season championship. Louis Orr, Seton Hall's head coach and a former XU assistant in the mid-1990s, won the District II Coach of the Year Award.

The USBWA's National Coach of the Year will be announced March 18, and the National Player of the Year will be announced March 25.
