Women: XU tops Bonnies

Xavier 65, St. Bonaventure 45

The Xavier women defeated St. Bonaventure at Cintas Center behind Amy Waugh's 16 points and 15 from Reetta Piipari.

Freshman Tara Boothe added 10 points.

Waugh became just the fourth Musketeer to record 500 career assists. She fed Piipari for a 3-pointer with 5:50 left in the first half to reach the milestone.

Waugh and Piipari form the only active duo in the country with 1,000 points and 500 assists apiece. Waugh has 1,410 career points and 501 assists. Piipari has 1,315 points and 632 assists.

Xavier improved to 18-7 (10-4 Atlantic 10). The Bonnies fell to 6-18 (3-10).

Both teams were sluggish out of the gate as they played to an 8-all tie in the first 8:20 of the contest. An 11-2 XU run over the next two and a half minutes put the Musketeers in control of the game at 19-10 with nine minutes left in the first half. Xavier continued to pull away from there and built the advantage to as many as 19 before halftime.

The Bonnies never posed a serious threat to the Musketeers in the second half. Eva Kadlecova led SBU with 13 points and Courtney Mattingly added 12.

Xavier will play its final regular season road game on Sunday at Duquesne. The Musketeers close out the regular season on Sunday, March 2 at 2 p.m. when Dayton comes to the Cintas Center. The game against UD will also be senior day for Piipari and Waugh.
