Cole ponders redshirt season

Faced with the near certainty of playing behind David West and three other big men, Xavier freshman Brandon Cole is considering a redshirt season.

That would maintain the Richton Park, Ill., native's four years of eligibility after this season.

"I was assessing the situation, and I'd probably rather sit out and take a year off and learn," Cole said. "I don't want to just be playing a few minutes a game. But at the same time, this year we could have a heck of a year. I don't want to miss that."

But for my own benefit, it probably would be best for me to sit out."

The decision is entirely up to Cole, Musketeers coach Thad Matta said, but it's a win-win situation for the team. Either Xavier uses Cole as a backup this season or gets more time for him to develop.

If he were to redshirt, Cole could practice and travel with the team, but he couldn't enter a game. Because he isn't a medical redshirt, Xavier doesn't have to declare Cole as a redshirt and could put him into a game, but that would count as a year of eligibility and end his redshirt status.

It would be best for Xavier to know Cole's decision by the Nov.18 season opener with St.Peter's.

"I'm still weighing all my options and talking with the coaching staff," Cole said. "I'll probably make a final decision sometime next week."

FOX GAMES GO STATEWIDE: Twelve of Xavier's 17 games on Fox Sports Net, either through Fox Sports Ohio or the Atlantic 10 Network, will be broadcast across the entire realm of Fox Sports Ohio, station officials in Cleveland said.

All of the FSO games are on the local affiliate, but those that don't conflict with Columbus Blue Jackets games will be seen throughout Ohio and in parts of West Virginia, Kentucky and Indiana.
