PHILADELPHIA - Atlantic 10 coaches and media predicted repeat performances from Xavier and Temple at Thursday's annual preseason media day.
Both teams were voted to win their respective divisions, Temple in the A-10 East and Xavier in the A-10 West. Last season, Temple tied St. Joseph's for first place in the East while Xavier won the West outright.
With four starters back from last season's 26-6 team, Xavier received 32 of 34 first-place votes in the West, followed by Dayton and Richmond, which each received one first-place vote.
In the East, Temple received 27 first-place votes, while St.Bonaventure got three followed by Massachusetts and St. Joseph's each with two. Temple placed third in the National Invitation Tournament last season and returns two starters from that team.
"I think people just like to put my team up there every year," Temple coach John Chaney said. "I think they like me."
Chaney said his team underachieved last season despite a 12-4 league record.
"Our players are used to being in the NCAA Tournament," he said. "When we don't get into that, it hasn't been a good year for us."
In the same poll, two-time A-10 Player of the Year David West was named to the Preseason A-10 first team with teammate Romain Sato.
"I don't even think about that too much," West said. "It's really no big deal."
They are joined on the first team by St.Joseph's Jameer Nelson, George Washington's Chris Monroe and St.Bonaventure's Marques Green.
"(Green) does so many things well offensively and defensively," said St.Bonaventure coach Jan van Breda Kolff. "He's complete player, even at 5-foot-7."
Xavier's Lionel Chalmers was selected to the preseason second team while West and Sato both were named to the defensive team.
