Five Questions with David West

After he announced last spring that he would return to Xavier instead of entering the NBA draft, All-American and National Player of the Year candidate David West got a tattoo. Not just any tattoo, but an X that he says shows his commitment to Xavier. He took time this week to answer five questions from the Enquirer's Dustin Dow.

Q: Explain this tattoo, “My life, My way” and the X.

A: It's to show some type of loyalty to the school because I came in as a freshman, and one of the things Coach (Skip) Prosser said to me was, if you do the things you're supposed to do, then Xavier will do what they're supposed to do, and you'll be successful.

Xavier has been the best place for me, and it's where I've been able to establish my playing career.

“My life, My way,” is basically, I'm going to do things now that will be the way I feel they should go. It's my life in the end. Nobody has to walk in my shoes. Nobody has to do what I do, but me.

Q: When did you get it done?

A; The end of May. After the announcement.

Q: There are many things you could have done to show loyalty. Why get a tattoo?

A: Oh, I don't know. I always wanted one. I'll probably get some more before the season starts. I figured it was a good place to start.

Q: What did your family say?

A: They don't care. My older brother actually got his first one. He had been wanting to get one for a while.

Q: Did you consider getting anything else?

A: No, for the first one, I had been set on getting the X. I just like the symbol. It's just one thing, but it sticks out, just the X. No funny figures. We're the Musketeers, but our symbol is the X.
