Xavier women lose again




        ORONO, Maine — The Musketeers shot just 30 percent in the second half and lost to Maine 79-67 Saturday in the consolation game of the Black Bears' Dead River Company Classic.

        XU connected on just one field goal between the 11- and one-minute marks in the second half, allowing the Black Bears to make up a 17-point halftime deficit.

        Both Maine and Xavier are 2-2.

        XU hit four consecutive 3-pointers in a three-minute span and five in the final eight minutes of the first half to hold a 44-27 halftime lead.

        Maine used a 16-4 run over the first eight minutes of the second half to cut the Xavier lead to 48-43.

        The Black Bears took their first lead of the second half at 54-53 with 7:23 remaining on a layup by Melissa Heon.

        Reetta Piipari led Xavier with 19 points. She also added seven assists. Kate Kreager added 18 points and Shavon Bell tallied 13.
