Lady Muskies sweep RI

XU plays Temple in A-10 volleyball tourney

Cincinnati Enquirer

XU swept Rhode Island in the Atlantic 10 Tournament semifinals 30-21, 30-21, 30-19 Saturday in Dayton, advancing to play Temple today in the title game at 1 p.m. in UD's Frericks Center. XU (24-3) can clinch an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament if its beats the Owls (21-9) for a third time, having already twice beaten them by a 3-1 score.

Sara Bachus (Seton) and Katey Wygant led XU Saturday with 15 kills apiece.

        • XU swept the A-10 individual player honors, with Bachus repeating as player of the year and Molly Martin named both rookie of the year and setter of the year. XU had four players named to the all-conference team: Bachus, Martin, Wygant and Jill Hampton.

Bachus, a senior right-side hitter, is the first player in conference history to win the top player award in successive seasons. She leads the A-10 in hitting percentage (.405) and kills per game (4.69), ranking 13th and 28th, respectively, nationally in those categories.

Martin, a freshman, leads the league with 13.82 assists per game, which is fifth-best in the country. Hampton, a senior outside hitter from Notre Dame Academy, ranks second in the A-10 with 3.64 digs per game and fifth with 3.46 kills per game. Wygant, a junior middle blocker, leads the conference in blocks per game (1.24).

Hampton was also selected to the Verizon Academic All-District third team.

        • XU baseball signees: Steve Sakosits, a pitcher/outfielder from Red Bank (N.J.) Middletown South with a career .404 batting average; and Nick Stavrakis, an all-state first baseman from Somerville (N.J.) Immaculata.
