Xavier to interview Greensboro coach

Creighton coach says he's not interested

UNC Greensboro basketball coach Fran McCaffery confirmed Thursday that he is interested in the Xavier opening.

The News and Record of Greensboro, N.C., is reporting today that McCaffery and Xavier athletic director Mike Bobinski are expected to meet in North Carolina “probably this weekend” and that McCaffery also is interviewing with George Washington University on Tuesday.

Athletic directors at UNC Greensboro, Creighton and Butler have been or will be asked for permission by Xavier to talk to their coaches, sources said Thursday.

Creighton coach Dana Altman told the Enquirer on Thursday he is not interested. “I've thought about it,” said Altman, a Wilber, Neb., native. “I have a lot of respect for Xavier, but I am happy at Creighton. It's home.”

Altman had not spoken to XU officials when he made those comments.

Butler coach Thad Matta could not be reached, but sources have indicated he, too, is interested in the XU job. Butler athletic director John Parry, through a university spokesman, would not comment on whether Xavier had asked to speak to Matta.

        Bobinski declined interviews Thursday.

An XU source said the school's search is not limited to those three coaches and added that Xavier would like to at least be close to hiring a new coach by late next week.

Xavier is trying to replace Skip Prosser, who resigned Tuesday after seven years to become head coach at Wake Forest.
