Xavier women make tourney finals
Enquirer news services
PHILADELPHIA Xavier has put teams on notice: get ready to score if you want to win.
The 12th-ranked Musketeers got 22 points from Taru Tuukkanen and beat Dayton 80-71 on Sunday to advance to their third straight Atlantic 10 Conference championship game.
They play George Washington at 5 p.m. today. Xavier and GW split their season series, each winning at home. GW beat Temple 75-59 Sunday.
You know you have to score in the 80s if you want to beat them, Dayton coach Jaci Clark said of the Musketeers. That's where they put pressure on you.
Nicole Levandusky scored 17 points, Jennifer Phillips had 15 and Reeta Piipari added 11 for top-seeded Xavier (27-2l), the defending conference champion. The Musketeers also won the regular season title and have won 17 straight.
Sunday's win set a school record for wins in a season, besting the 26-5 mark set last season.
What we do best is share the ball, Xavier coach Melanie Balcomb said. We take very good shots because we make the extra pass.
