XU could host preseason tourney

By Neil Schmidt
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Xavier has five of its 11 nonconference “slots” for next season filled. One of the remaining six could be the College Sports Information Directors of America's annual CoSIDA Classic.

Dorna Sports Promotions, which stages the NABC Classic and the CoSIDA Classic, has offered XU the chance to host that event the weekend after Thanksgiving. It is an exempt event in which four teams play two games each, though the tourney counts as just one game against each team's limit of 27 regular-season games.

“They have faxed us a tentative agreement,” XU athletic director Mike Bobinski said. “We have the dates available. The whole issue is if they can deliver a field with enough strength and that's attractive enough to make the event make sense for us.”

XU's commitments are home games against Cincinnati, Wisconsin and Kent State and road games at Miami University and San Francisco.

Bobinski said XU could be near home-and-home deals with Creighton, Gonzaga and Georgia Tech.
