Xavier Notebook
Young ends transfer talk
By Neil Schmidt
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Dave Young is back in the lineup. And he'll be back at Xavier.
The sophomore guard, who fell as low as 10th on the depth chart last month, has resurfaced in the rotation and ended his earlier talk of transferring.
I'm happy where I'm at, he said. I'm coming back.
Wednesday was his breakout game: a career-high 10 points with three rebounds, a steal and an assist. He scored every point in a 36-second, 8-0 run in the final minute of the first half that turned the game around.
That felt great, Young said. It felt like I was back in high school.
Young, once a ballyhooed recruit, has had a tough two years at XU. He lost his freshman season as an academic non-qualifier, unable to practice with the team. Then he struggled this winter to learn XU's system and cope with his limited role.
It's a hard adjustment, coach Skip Prosser said. I spent plenty of time on the bench in my (playing) career, and I hated it.
Young scored nine points in each of the season's first two games and averaged 11.1 minutes and 3.9 points over the first seven. But he totaled just 64 minutes in the next 14 games, averaging 1.5 points.
Entering play Wednesday, Young had put together solid outings in short stints the three previous games. Prosser had said, I should be playing him longer stretches than I am now.
Wednesday, Young scored a fast-break layup shortly after entering, a basket he said loosened him up. Then he sank a 3-pointer. Then he stole a pass and took that in for a layup, then made another 3 on the next possession.
I'm happy for him having a day in the sun, Prosser said. I hope it's a precursor to a big finish to his season.
Said Young: I'm accepting my role. I'm still learning bits and pieces. I'm happy to be playing, period. I just want to help the team.
FREE THROWS: XU continues to excel in getting to the free throw line and converting. It has made 489 free throws, compared to 285 by its opponents. That differential of 204 is the second-biggest in the country, behind the 222 of Stanford, which has made 466; its opponents, 244.
TALK TO WEST: XU sophomore center David West will do an online chat at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on www.sportsline.com.
UP NEXT: XU visits LaSalle (10-14, 4-8 A-10) at 4 p.m. Sunday (ESPN2). The Musketeers beat LaSalle 81-66 Jan.7 at Cintas Center.
