Skip Prosser asked for aggressive play. What the Xavier coach got looked a lot like his best and fastest teams.

“We wanted to be in attack mode,” he said.

XU sped past St. Bonaventure 77-60 Wednesday night like it was late for a very important date: the Big Dance. At 20-5 (11-3 Atlantic 10), XU is closing in on an NCAA Tournament invitation.

“We wanted to go get 20 wins; we didn't want to stumble upon it,” XU senior center Reggie Butler said.

XU has totaled 20 victories for a fifth consecutive season, a school record.

Wednesday, XU spread its scoring and turned up the tempo. It broke its full-court press out of mothballs and earned some easy transition baskets, including an 8-0 run in 36 seconds late in the first half that blew open a close game.

Five Musketeers scored in double figures as they shot 46.6 percent from the field and forced the Bonnies (15-10, 6-7 A-10) into 22 turnovers.

“This (XU) team is an NCAA Tournament team,” Bonnies coach Jim Baron said.

St. Bonaventure played Wednesday without two of its top six scorers, senior center Peter Van Paassen and freshman point guard Marques Green. It was able to make it a game for the first 19 minutes, trailing just 32-28 at that point.

That's when XU sophomore guard David Young sank a 3-pointer. Then Young stole a pass and drove in for an easy layup. Then Kevin Frey stole the ball, and XU worked it around to Young for another 3.

“We've traditionally been a team that spurts pretty well, though that's an area (this season) that we need to get better at,” Prosser said. “We were fortunate to get that spurt at the end of the half, because when they got behind, they ran out of guys who could score.”

Young scored a career-high 10 points, including all the points in that 8-0 run. His flurry made it 40-28 at halftime, and the Bonnies would never be closer than nine points again.

XU chose to push the pace to wear down a team playing with just one point guard, and the style served to wake the Musketeers up.

Prosser said he thought his team had been playing cautiously, playing “not to lose.” The coaches posted a picture of a theoretical XU NCAA Tournament 2001 ring on each player's locker, with “How much does it mean to you?” written above the picture.

“We want to play our way in, and the way to do that is by making plays,” XU assis tant Mark Schmidt said. “The easiest place is in the open court.”

St.Bonaventure often tried to press XU, which led to several easy Musketeer baskets after breaking the press.

Lloyd Price led XU with 13 points, the lowest total for an XU leading scorer this season. XU has had five different leading scorers the past five games.

“Guys are unselfish,” Schmidt said. “No one cares who gets the points.”

XU finishes 13-1 at home, its first season in Cintas Center. It is 68-4 at home the past five seasons. XU has won five straight Senior Nights and 19 of the past 21.

The seniors were the focal points:

Butler totaled seven points and three rebounds, and the crowd chanted his name throughout the game. Maurice McAfee totaled 10 points, six assists and three steals. Little-used center Marcus Mason got to play three minutes but didn't score.

Walk-ons Ryan Caldwell (McNicholas) and Tom Compton (St. Xavier) saw their first action of the season. Compton, who entered with just 20 seconds left, scored on a bank shot in the last 10 seconds.

Still in must-win mode, XU visits LaSalle (10-14, 4-9 A-10) at 4 p.m. Sunday in an ESPN2 game. The Musketeers beat LaSalle 81-66 Jan.7 at Cintas Center.
