Double ranking first for Xavier
Only eight others have men and women in Top 25
By Neil Schmidt
The Cincinnati Enquirer
For the first time in school history, Xavier's basketball teams are nationally ranked.
The men's team (17-3) debuted in the Associated Press poll Monday at No. 24, its first appearance in 26 months. The women's team (19-2), a regular in the polls this season, rose two spots in the AP poll to No.13 its highest ranking ever.
This signifies a level of accomplishment, XU athletic director Mike Bobinski said. Not too many teams can say they're in both polls. We're in some pretty high company.
Eight other schools have teams in both polls: Duke, Florida, Tennessee, Iowa State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Arizona and Wisconsin.
XU's combined winning percentage of .878 (36-5) was fourth-best entering play Monday, behind only Duke (.932, 41-3), Tennessee (.891, 41-5) and Iowa State (.881, 37-5).
XU's men were last ranked at No.23 in the Nov. 30, 1998 poll. They earned their ranking Monday (173 points) on the strength of 12 victories in their past 13 games.
