Xavier's Kevin Frey and Lloyd Price each had offseason surgery, vowing to come back healthy and play consistently. But midway through the season, both are playing in pain again. Both are unhappy with themselves.
For us to be good, those two have to be consistently good, XU coach Skip Prosser said. When they're not, we're not.
Frey is averaging 12 points and 6.5 rebounds in victories but 8.3 points and two rebounds in losses. Price is averaging nine points and 5.3 rebounds in victories, 5.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in losses.
I ain't been playing well, Price said. (But) it's not like I have an answer for it.
Said Frey: I think I've been playing horrible.
Each is hampered by an injury.
Price, who had torn cartilage around his shoulder last season, suffered an ankle sprain two days before this season started. He missed four of Xavier's first five games.
I'm going to have the same amount of pain until the season's over, he said. But I think it's more mental than physical right now. I wouldn't blame anything on my ankle.
Price, an Atlantic 10 first-team pick, is averaging 8.3 points (down from 13 last season) and 4.7 rebounds (down from six). He's shooting .343, down from .446 last year season.
Frey, whose left ankle had a bone spur last season, has two bone spurs in the ankle this season. He'll need another operation after the season. I've just got to bear with it and be tough, he said.
Frey is averaging 11.2 points (up from 8.8 last year) and 5.5 rebounds (up from 5.1). His .403 shooting is down from .411 last season.
Dating to last season, XU is 16-3 when Frey scores in double figures, 16-12 when he doesn't.
I think once Lloyd and I start playing to our capabilities, it'll improve the team a lot, Frey said.
