McAfee, West win Xavier awards

BY MICHAEL PERRY
The Cincinnati Enquirer

David West, the freshman whose ability to contribute immediately was a big part of Xavier's success last season, received two awards at the team's basketball banquet Thursday night at the Westin.

West was named Best Rebounder and also received the Lou Hirt Society Coaches Award.

Point guard Maurice McAfee (Best Free Throw Shooter, Team Assist Leader) was honored twice.

The big surprise came when the team's Connie Brown “Most Inspirational” Award went to student managers Todd Kalsey and Dan Shworles, the first managers to receive one of the top awards.

“It comes down to loyalty and selflessness and conscientiousness and love of the university, and an unparallelled commitment to the success of the team and to the players on the team,” coach Skip Prosser said. “I just feel it's something that needed to be recognized.”

Xavier also honored outgoing seniors Obi Harris, walk-on Kyle Ballinger and Darnell Williams, who was at a pre-NBA draft camp.

        Other awards:

        • Lloyd Price (Gordon Nead Most Improved Player)

        • Kevin Frey (Musketeer Award for top reserve player)

        • Reggie Butler (Leadership Award)

        • Alvin Brown (Ernest A. Staak Memorial Award for “the player who through his unselfish dedication and love of the game, best exemplifies the life of Ernest Staak”)

        • Aaron Turner (Best Defensive Player)

        • Harris (Team Loyalty Award).

West underwent surgery Thursday to remove a bone spur in the second toe on his right foot. He and Frey, who had surgery Wednesday to remove bone chips in his left ankle, are not expected to play basketball for at least six weeks.
