A-10 dropping divisions

PHILADELPHIA — The Atlantic 10 Conference will not be adding a new school for next season and will play 2000-2001 with 11 teams and no divisions, sources indicated Wednesday night.

Virginia Tech is leaving the A-10 to become a full-time member of the Big East in July.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported Monday that the University of Richmond will decide this month whether to join the Atlantic 10 or remain in the Colonial Athletic Association, of which it is a charter member.

Ray Cella, assistant commissioner for public relations for the A-10, denied the report.

“No membership has been offered and no membership has been accepted,” Cella said.

The conference is putting together a four-year schedule that will have each team playing every other school six times. If a school is added during that period, it will return to the two-division format used this season.

Details are still being worked out.
