Williams treated for dehydration
BY MICHAEL PERRY
The Cincinnati Enquirer
BLACKSBURG, Va. As Xavier players filed out of their locker room after halftime, several tried to sneak a peek into another locker room across the hall. There, senior Darnell Williams was being treated by doctors after complaining of pain in his chest just before halftime.
We were concerned, coach Skip Prosser said. He didn't look good.
I just felt funny, Williams said.
Trainer David Fluker said Williams was overheated and suffered from dehydration. He was cleared to return and did so with 17:32 remaining. Alvin Brown started the second half in his place.
Williams' chest still hurt a little afterward, and he was checked by doctors again. He's fine; no problem, Fluker said.
After scoring in double figures 12 of 13 games, sophomore Lloyd Price was held to fewer than 10 points for the second straight time. He finished with nine points on 3-of-10 shooting.
Their defense was one of the reasons, Price said. Another reason was my shots just weren't falling. That's why we lost, because I didn't contribute as much as I usually do.
It's a first
Prosser received his first technical foul of the season, arguing a traveling call on Kevin Frey with 9:45 left in the first half. Frey grabbed an offensive rebound while surrounded by two Hokies, then fell to the court. Prosser thought he was fouled.
One last time
Xavier may have made its last trip to Blacksburg. The Hokies next season move to the Big East Conference in basketball. There has been no word from the Atlantic 10 as to what school may replace Virginia Tech, and there is a chance no team will be added by next season and the A-10 will go with 11.
Virginia Tech has been a member of the Big East football conference since its inception in 1991 and competes in 15 sports in the Big East. It will become a full member July 1.
Sophomore reserve Brandon McIntosh, who suffered a fractured cheekbone Jan.30, has been cleared to play but did not Saturday. He will wear a clear plastic face mask, Fluker said.
Williams is tied with James Posey for 12th on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,455 career points.
Xavier plays host to George Washington at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday (ESPN2). The Colonials (13-12, 7-5 A-10) have won seven of eight.
