ATLANTIC-10 NOTEBOOK

Fordham coach takes refs to task

BY MICHAEL PERRY
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Fordham coach Bob Hill called it “an embarrassment” to the Atlantic 10 Conference and the game of basketball.

He was referring to the Rams' game Sunday at St. Joseph's, in which nine technical fouls — believed by the league office to be an A-10 record — were called and Hill, Fordham sophomore Steve Canal and St. Joe's sophomore Marvin O'Connor were ejected.

“It was a very poorly officiated game,” Hill said Monday. “I felt bad for the league. It was a jamboree. I didn't think they controlled it in any way shape or form.”

Fordham was called for 32 fouls, St. Joseph's 19.

Fordham attempted just 15 free throws, St. Joseph's 55.

        The Hawks won 93-86.

The officials: Reggie Greenwood, Glenn Mayborg and Mike Kitts.

“The bizarreness of the second half, I'm still trying to digest that to be honest with you,” St. Joseph's coach Phil Martelli said.

Hill was officially reprimanded Monday by league commissioner Linda Bruno for his comments, which violated the A-10 code of conduct. Canal was suspended for one game for actions unbecoming a Fordham student-athlete.

O'Connor will also serve a one-game suspension and miss tonight's home game against La Salle. If he gets another technical foul for fighting, he will be suspended for the rest of the season.

FADING AWAY? After St. Bonaventure defeated Temple on Jan.15, the Bonnies were 12-2 and No.10 in the Ratings Percentage Index rankings. They appeared on their way to the school's first NCAA Tournament appearance in 22 years.

But SBU has dropped five of its past seven, including two losses to Fordham, and its RPI is now No.61.

“No.1, we've had too many turnovers in those games that we ended up falling short,” coach Jim Baron said. “I (also) thought we had some defensive lapses.”

FLYING HIGH: Junior Tony Stanley, Dayton's leading scorer (14.4 ppg), is one of only four players in the country to record 40 3-pointers, 40 offensive rebounds, 40 assists and 40 steals. The others: Shane Battier (Duke), Jason Perez (Wichita State) and Kyle Hill (Eastern Illinois).

NAME CHANGE: Scratch the arena name The Forum at the Apollo of Temple. The Owls' home court was renamed Sunday the Liacouras Center, after outgoing President Peter J. Liacouras, who will retire this summer after 18 years.

ON GUARD: Why is Temple point guard Pepe Sanchez considered so valuable? He is already second in the A-10 with 114 assists despite having been out with an ankle injury for eight games.
