Chalmers to stay at XU

BY MICHAEL PERRY
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Freshman point guard Lionel Chalmers, ruled a partial qualifier by the NCAA this week, will remain at Xavier, Athletic Director Mike Bobinski said Thursday night.

“That is certainly the impression we get from him and his family,” Bobinski said. “He is going to stay here. They certainly would like for us to explore every possible option, and we're going to do that.”

Bobinski spoke Thursday with an NCAA official and was led to believe that any further appeal on Chalmers' behalf would not change his status.

“They're pretty consistent with what they've done; they're not prone to making changes on eligibility status,” Bobinski said. “We are going to look for other options, but I'd rather not get into those at this point.”

Chalmers will be able to practice and be on scholarship but not play in games. He has the option of continuing to pay his own way to school and taking the SAT or ACT test this fall with the hopes of becoming eligible for the second semester.

Chalmers declared partial qualifier Sept. 16, 1999
