Fresno State pulls out of XU game
BY MIKE DeCOURCY
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Xavier's plan to play a nationally televised basketball game against Fresno State in December has fallen through.
Officials at ESPN2 arranged for XU to play Jerry Tarkanian's Bulldogs Dec.27 at the Cincinnati Gardens, but Fresno continued to search for a home game as an alternative to visiting Cincinnati.
When Northern Arizona agreed this week to visit Fresno on Dec.4, XU-FSU was off.
The Fresno State basketball program had guaranteed its season-ticket holders a 16-game home schedule. Playing at Xavier would have left the Bulldogs one short.
Xavier Athletic Director Mike Bobinski still had not heard from Fresno officials late Wednesday. I will be very disappointed if that's the story, but we won't be all that shocked, he said. We had heard that was wavering.
Xavier does not have an alternative at this point for its schedule opening. The Musketeers are hoping for some help from ESPN in finding a suitable opponent.
ESPN indicated since they're the ones that brought this together, if it falls apart, they realize they have an obligation to find us a game, Bobinski said. That may get done, and it may not. So we'll have to try and do everything we can to go out and beat the bushes for another game.
