Mack joining Xavier staff
BY MICHAEL PERRY
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Xavier is expected to add former Musketeer Chris Mack to the men's basketball staff as director of basketball operations, a newly created position that is typically called an administrative assistant at other schools.
Mack has been offered the job, sources say, but the announcement won't come from the school until paperwork is completed.
He has been the girls basketball coach at Mount Notre Dame the past four years; his teams were 74-19, and he was named Girls Greater Cincinnati League Coach of the Year in 1996 and '99.
Mack interviewed at Xavier last year for the assistant coach's job that went to Mark Gaffney. Coach Skip Prosser has long sought to have a director of basketball operations for the program. When Prosser was interviewing with Notre Dame at the end of XU's season, the administration agreed to add the position.
Mack's responsibilities will include tape exchange, helping monitor players' academic progress, travel arrangements, practice facility scheduling and correspondence. He is not al lowed to coach on the court.
Mack, 29, a graduate of St.Xavier High School, played two years at Evansville before transfering to Xavier.
After redshirting the 1990-91 season, Mack was injured in his first XU exhibition in November "91. He suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and was out for the season.
The summer before the next season, he tore the ACL in his other knee and saw limited action in 21 games as a senior.
KELSEY TO MIAMI? Elder High School graduate Pat Kelsey, another former Musketeer and runner-up for the director of basketball operations position, interviewed Tuesday with Miami coach Charlie Coles for the No.3 position on the RedHawks coaching staff.
Kelsey, who graduated from XU in 1998, expects to hear from Miami later this month.
CHICAGO-BOUND: Recent XU graduate Lenny Brown has been invited to the NBA pre-draft camp in Chicago next week. James Posey also was invited but will only meet with teams individually.
