Xavier point guard Maurice McAfee recently returned from a trip to the Ukraine with a college all-star team, which split four games against the Ukrainian National Team.

The 6-foot junior, who should inherit the starting point guard job at XU this fall, was the starting shooting guard on the trip.

McAfee said he averaged 15.5 points.

“They ran some plays for me, and I got to put up some shots,” McAfee said Monday. “I didn't overdo it. I didn't go to the hole a lot. I worked on my pull-up jumper, my middle game.”

The college team was coached by Syracuse assistant coach Louis Orr, the Withrow High School graduate and former Xavier assistant.

Orr said McAfee played his best in the biggest game of the series, when the arena was sold out (8,000 fans), the game was nationally televised and the country's president was in attendance. McAfee scored 22 points.

“Ukraine had the most respect for him,” Orr said. “They tried a box-and-one, they tried to double him. They went to a zone because of him; they had no one who could guard him. He earned that respect.”
