Junior-college center looks at XU

BY MICHAEL PERRY
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Marcus Mason, a 6-foot-9, 245-pound sophomore center from Santa Monica (Calif.) College, is scheduled to make an official recruiting visit to Xavier this weekend, Santa Monica associate head coach Marvin Menzies said Tuesday.

“From what I understand, they need a big guy, and that's him,” Menzies said. “I believe he could come in and earn a starting position or at least compete for one.

“He's a very instinctive scorer around the block, with a nice baby sky hook. He has a knack for the boards. He's a very aggressive, very physical player. He's a strong man. I don't think he has any true weaknesses.”

Menzies said Mason averaged between 13 and 14 points and 10 rebounds on a team that was ranked No.1 in the state most of the season and had six players aver aging in double figures.

Mason, who attended Dorsey High School in South Central Los Angeles, already has visited Fresno State and is scheduled to visit Hawaii the week after Xavier. Auburn and Oregon are other schools involved, Menzies said, adding that Xavier coach Skip Prosser was expected in California today to meet with Mason.

“Great kid, a real good catch for someone,” Menzies said. “He's blossoming and blooming as we speak. He was not this good coming out of high school. He's really improved at a drastic rate. He's a very coachable kid. He has a great disposition toward the game. He's just been a pleasure to have.”

Mason was one of the top-ranked junior-college big men in California all season, Menzies said. He has two years of eligibility remaining.

        Xavier has one scholarship available.
