McAfee wins 'most improved' award




        Sophomore guard Maruice McAfee won the Gordon Nead Award for most improved player at Xavier's annual team banquet Thursday night at the Omni Netherland Plaza Hotel downtown.

        About 400 fans attended.

        Other honors:

        Connie Brown Award (most inspirational) — sophomore center Reggie Butler.

        Ernest Staak Award (dedication and love of the game) — freshman guard Alvin Brown.

        Musketeer Award (significant non-starter) — freshman guard-forward Lloyd Price.

        Lew Hirt Society Coaches Award — senior guard Gary Lumpkin.

        Leadership Award — senior guard Lenny Brown.

        Best rebounder — senior forward James Posey (8.9 rpg).

        Best defensive player — Posey (school-record 102 steals).

        Team assist leader — Lumpkin (122).

        Best free throw shooter — McAfee (.835).
