XU: 1 grant left once West signs
BY MICHAEL PERRY
The Cincinnati Enquirer
One common denominator among the incoming Xavier recruits: Winning.
The combined records this season of the three players who have signed or verbally committed to the Musketeers: 78-8.
Wednesday was the first day of the spring signing period, and Xavier began the process of getting papers to David West from Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va.
The 6-foot-8 power forward, who verbally committed in February, needs to sign a national letter of intent, then have his parents in North Carolina sign, too. Only after it is received by Xavier can the coaches talk about West.
David Young and Lionel Chalmers signed in the fall, and 6-5 guard-forward Brandon McIntosh, a Roger Bacon graduate and a freshman at Xavier, will be offered a scholarship if he is in good academic standing at the end of the school year.
That leaves Xavier with one scholarship remaining. The coaches are trying to sign a big man, but no visits are scheduled.
A look at the three incoming recruits:
West averaged 17.4 points and a team-high 8.9 rebounds for Hargrave (27-3) and is scheduled to play in the ACC- SEC All-Star game Saturday (the game includes a few players who have not signed with teams from those leagues).
Young averaged 24.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists for New Castle (Pa.), which finished 30-2 and was ranked as high as No.6 in the country by USA Today. The 6-5 shooting guard shot 61 percent from the field, 43 percent from three-point range and scored a school-record 45 points in one game.
He was named player of the year in the state by some publications, his coach said.
Chalmers averaged 22.4 points and 4.4 rebounds for Albany (N.Y.) High School (21-3). The 6-foot point guard shot 45 percent from the field, was first-team all-area and selected by coaches as the best player in his league.
