XU's Posey, Brown voted to A-10 first team

Frosh Price makes league's all-rookie team

Xavier finished second in the Atlantic 10 West Division but is the only school with more than one player on the All-Atlantic 10 Conference first team.

Seniors James Posey and Lenny Brown were named first-team all-league Tuesday after leading the Musketeers (20-9) to a 12-4 A-10 record. Posey, who has set a Xavier single-season record for steals, also was selected as the defensive player of the year. XU freshman Lloyd Price made the All-Rookie team.

Also on the first team: Player of the Year Shawnta Rogers (George Washington), Rookie of the Year Lamar Odom (Rhode Island) and Pepe Sanchez (Temple).

Brown was first-team all-league as a sophomore, but was on the second team last season — though he thought he did not deserve that. He is Xavier's leading scorer for the third time in four years (17.6 ppg) and set a school record for three-pointers in a season (79).

“I think I deserved it this year,” said Brown, who averaged 19.9 points in A-10 games. “I shot the ball a lot better. I think I had a better year than last year.

“I knew the players coming back were going to work on their game, and I had to work on mine.”

Posey, the league's Sixth Man Award winner the past two years and second-team all- league last season, started all 29 games for XU and is the team's top rebounder (9.6) and No.2 scorer (16.7). He also leads Xavier in blocks (29) and steals (83).

“When I'm playing, I'm working hard and having fun,” Posey said. “That helps a lot as a confidence builder to continue to work because (opposing coaches) see it also.”

Price, who started 10 games but only one during A-10 play, is fourth on the team in scoring (9.2 ppg).

He also is third in steals (49) and third in blocks (23).

“I think it's a big accomplishment,” Price said. “I'm real happy right now. I think every part of my game can improve a lot. This year, I played a level below OK. I haven't played anywhere near my potential, but I think as time goes on it'll be shown.”

Absent from the all-league teams: XU senior Gary Lumpkin, who was first-team as a sophomore, third-team last season, second-team in the preseason but has had an inconsistent senior year.

Voting was done by the league's coaches.
