Posey hits record 31st straight FT

BY MICHAEL PERRY
The Cincinnati Enquirer

PHILADELPHIA — James Posey got the record and made some big shots in the process.

The Xavier senior hit two foul shots with 10.7 seconds left in Thursday night's 59-53 victory at St. Joseph's. That gave Posey 31 consecutive free throws, a school record.

He came in trailing XU Hall of Famer Bill Kirvin by one and had not gone to the line all night.

“I read about it in the paper the day before we left,” Posey said. “I was trying not to think about it.”

Still, when he went to the line, it was on his mind. So were coach Skip Prosser's final words to him: “You're gonna make these, right?”

        Then Prosser smiled.

Perhaps most impressive: Of Posey's 31 foul shots, 29 have come on the road.

“I just want to continue it now,” he said.

Nice catch
When Xavier shot around at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse early Thursday, Prosser noticed one of the baskets was crooked and told St. Joseph's Athletic Director Don DiJulia. A damaged part was discovered, and it took about six hours to replace.

Homecoming
Assistant coach Jeff Battle is from Philadelphia, and XU players Lloyd Price, Gary Lumpkin and Lenny Brown are from the Wilmington, Del., area, roughly 30 miles away. All four had friends and family members in the stands.

It was the 13th game in the City of Brotherly Love for Lumpkin and Brown, who have won six straight and are 9-4 in Philly.

Brown has averaged 15.2 points in Philadelphia, shooting 44.7 percent from the field and 40.3 percent from three-point range. Lumpkin has averaged 10.0 points, shooting 37.5 percent from the field and 38.2 percent from three-point range.

Notable numbers
The Musketeers are 7-6 away from the Cincinnati Gardens. ... Prosser is now second all-time among XU coaches with 97 victories. He passed Clem Crowe (96) and trails Pete Gillen (202). ... Brown has 217 career steals, nine shy of tying the school record. ... Brown has a school-record 199 career three-point field goals; Lumpkin has 198.

Up next
Xavier plays 4 p.m. Saturday at LaSalle.
