Brown has shot, but not defense

BY MICHAEL PERRY
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Lenny Brown is a hard man to please.

Despite scoring 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting with four three-pointers, three rebounds and three steals on Saturday, the Xavier senior did not feel he played well in the Musketeers' 93-69 victory over Virginia Tech.

“I wasn't really feeling it today,” Brown said. “The stats show I shot the ball pretty well; I could've shot it better. I wasn't emotional.”

He was bothered because Virginia Tech guard Eddie Lucas scored 19 points; he averages 15.6.

“I just gave him too many open looks,” Brown said.

Comeback kid
Sophomore point guard Maurice McAfee, playing with a thigh bruise, had his third-best scoring output of the season with 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting. He also had two assists, one steal and no turnovers in 18 minutes.

In three previous games, McAfee was 2-of-10 from the field with five points, 12 assists and eight turnovers.

“Coach showed me the stats at practice the other day,” McAfee said. “He told me to think about why I was shooting that bad ... So I just tried to mix it up and improve on my shot selection.”

Notable numbers
With 3:55 left, freshman Lloyd Price made his first three-pointer since Dec.9. He had missed nine in a row. ... Virginia Tech, which shot 52.3 percent from the field, was also the last team to shoot better than 40 percent against Xavier. The Hokies shot 47.2 percent on Jan.6. ... Brown has 216 career steals; he needs 12 to set a school record.

Fan watch
In the final minutes Saturday, there was only a smattering of “We want UC chants.” Nothing that caught on.

Marked man
Brown, whose game-winning jump shot beat Cincinnati in Nov.1996, knows the Bearcat fans may be ready to get all over him at Thursday night's Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout.

“I hope they do because that just gets me going,” he said.

Up next
Xavier plays at Cincinnati at 9:30p.m. Thursday, then travels to Dayton for a noon game Saturday. Both are on ESPN.
