Junior Desmond Walker said Sunday that he is leaving the Xavier basketball team, returning home to Greenville, Ala., this week and would like to transfer to another Division I school by next month.

Xavier coach Skip Prosser said Walker “just needs a day to reflect. We're going to talk (today).” Prosser would not comment further.

Walker, who is averaging 5.6 points and 4.2 rebounds coming off the bench, was dressed for practice at the Cincinnati Gardens on Sunday. But before it started, the 6-foot-8 forward had his jacket on and was headed out of the building.

Prosser had just finished talking to Walker.

“He told me I don't really act like my heart is into it, which it's not fully,” Walker said. “So I just decided to leave.

“I've been thinking about it for the last couple of games, because I know I haven't been playing the way I wanted to. I didn't really feel comfortable. I just made my decision today.”

The highlight of the season for the Florida Community College product was in Game 3 against Morgan State when Walker had 15 points and 14 rebounds in a season-high 21 minutes.

In the seven games since, he has averaged 4.1 points and 2.3 rebounds in 12.3 minutes a game. Playing time was an issue for Walker.
