SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Xavier blew its opportunity to face Kentucky for the first time in 30 years.
With a second-round matchup in the Puerto Rico Shootout looming, the No. 4 Wildcats did their part by beating Colorado 64-52.
The No. 13 Musketeers couldn't do the same, losing to Pittsburgh 94-76.
While XU did not look ahead to a possible game with Kentucky, players and fans certainly were eager for a crack at UK.
"I'm deeply disappointed that we had a chance to play the defending national champions and even more disappointed that we got beat pretty handily," senior Gary Lumpkin said. "I'm disappointed for both."
XU now plays Colorado, which struggled past Denver (69-66) and Colorado State (75-67) in it first two games before easily beating Elon College (107-69) and Stephen F. Austin (83-55).
Senior guard Kenny Price, who scored 16 points against Kentucky on Thursday, is the guy to watch out for.
Lumpkin hit his first three-pointer of the season just 13 seconds into Thursday's game. He then missed his next six and is 1-of-18 (6 percent) for the season.
With five points, Lenny Brown moved into a tie with Dave Piontek for 15th place on the school's all-time scoring list (1,287 points). Lumpkin scored 17 points and moved into 19th place (1,149).
James Posey, who came in having hit all of his free throws, extended his streak to 13 in a row in the first half. Then he missed five free throws in the second half.
