Xavier coach Skip Prosser hopes to celebrate his 48th birthday today by getting out of the hospital.

"He doesn't want to spend his birthday hooked up to IV machines," assistant coach Jeff Battle said.

Prosser was hospitalized Sunday with pneumonia, and Monday missed his second straight day of practice.

The assistant coaches visited Prosser on Monday, and he told them he hoped to get out today, though he is not expected to be at practice. "We brought him the tape of (Sunday's) scrimmage," Battle said. "I told him not to watch it until he's feeling better; I didn't want him to just keel over. He said, "It was that bad?' I said, "Yeah, coach, it was pretty bad.' He said maybe he'd better wait."

Whether or not Prosser is able to coach Xavier's first exhibition game, Wednesday night against Hungary (7 p.m. Cincinnati Gardens) is unknown.

"We're preparing like he's not going to be there," Battle said. "Obviously we want him there. If I was a betting man, he's there."
