Notes:
- Poverty and income levels have a large impact on school test scores in Ohio. In fact, three measures listed we looked at -- the percentage of a school district's students on Aid for Dependent Children, the percentage who qualify for free or reduced lunches, and the district's median family income -- can explain more than two-thirds of the test scores posted by 607 school districts.
- Ninth-grade students did not take science tests in 1996.
- Five school districts were omitted from the list because of incomplete test score data.
- Some districts don't participate in the free-lunch program, giving them a zero (0) in that catagory. This did not significantly alter their score because of the weight given other factors.
- An overview of the study methodology is available.
