Coach: Leonard Rush (138-108-4).
Outlook: Last year's lumps (2-8 record), could turn into victories in 1999.
With 16 returning letter winners, including Ohio State-bound lineman Alphonso Townsend (6-foot-6, 280 pounds) and lineman Tony Barker (6-foot-3, 285 pounds), the Spartans will be tough in the trenches.
Backing up the line are a corp of experienced linebackers (Jeremy Wright, Jim Davenport, Brian Andrews) with Joey Simpson the only returning starter in the secondary.
Junior quarterback Nick Morris will direct a run oriented offense with Greg Johnson and Jeremy Wright.
''I think there's extra motivation, being this is the last year in the league,'' Rush said. ''It's a chance for us to win the league title in two of our last four years.''
