Holmes will be better. ''It's like you go into every year,'' Vander Meer said. ''If we can stay healthy, improve defenseively and win close games, we will have a better season.'' Holmes has 12 starters back, many of them at the skill positions. Vander Meer calls senior Jerry Weaver -- who plays wide receiver, defensive back, punter and punt returner -- the best all-around player in Northern Kentucky. ''As far as skill positions, it's probably as talented a group as I've coached,'' Vander Meer said. ''We can run pretty fast at any of those positions. We've got to get them the ball and let them take advantage of their athletic ability.''
