DAYTON, Ohio-First Lady Laura Bush is encouraging members of the military to become teachers when their tours of duty are over and this morning she is scheduled to speak at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
She's promoted the program, called Troops to Teachers, in speeches in Chicago, San Diego, and at Fort Jackson in South Carolina.
The program offers stipends or bonuses to former members of the military who agree to teach for at least three years. The Defense Department program has placed more than 4,000 teachers nationwide since 1994.
President Bush, who embraced the idea in his campaign, approved $18 million early this year for the program.
