He earned a bachelor's of fine art in photography from Wayne State University, where he also minored in journalism.

Before joining the Enquirer, he worked at The Leader in Corning, N.Y., from 1990 to 1992 and at The Repository in Canton, Ohio, from 1992 to 1995.
