Castroneves takes IRL season lead

NAZARETH, Pa. - It didn't take Helio Castroneves long to sum up his afternoon at Nazareth Speedway.

"That was tough," he said. "I always had a worry."

But in the end it was very rewarding. Castroneves claimed the top spot in the IRL driver standings and gave Toyota its first series title with a victory Sunday.

Castroneves held off Sam Hornish Jr. by 0.169 seconds as both stretched their fuel over the last 102 of 225 laps.

"My last two laps, I thought the fuel was going low." Castroneves said after replacing Tony Kanaan as the points leader.

CART: Alex Tagliani dominated the Montreal Molson Indy, but Michel Jourdain won.

"Alex was fastest and we couldn't keep up with his pace," Jourdain said. "The only way we could win was saving fuel."

Tagliani, the pole winner, led 52 of the 75 laps. But he stopped two laps earlier than the other leaders on his first two pit stops.

Tagliani held a lead of just over 1.5 seconds - about 10 car-lengths - on Jourdain before making his final stop on the 58th lap. Jourdain and the rest of the leaders pitted two laps later, with Jourdain's Team Rahal crew giving him just enough fuel to drive his Lola-Ford Cosworth to the end.
