Ohio slips on list in venture capital

Halfway through the year, Ohio slipped back into 20th place in the receipt of venture capital.

Through June 30, Ohio companies and entrepreneurs collected $53 million from seven venture capital deals, which put the state ahead of Michigan and Arizona and behind Illinois and the District of Columbia, according to VentureOne in San Francisco.

California was first. Indiana and South Dakota were tied at 34th with $2 million each. Kentucky was 36th with $1.4 million.

Ohio was No. 18 last year. Perhaps more worrisome for the state's capacity for business incubation, Ohio raised only $10.8 million in the second quarter of 2003, good for 26th place.
