Brolin to play Reagan on miniseries

map
LOS ANGELES - Barbra Streisand sleeping with a Republican? She will be soon when her husband, actor James Brolin (Hotel), stars as Ronald Reagan in CBS' The Reagans miniseries for November.

"We haven't asked Barbra Streisand what she thinks about James Brolin playing Ronald Reagan, but we'll have to live with that," said Les Moon-ves, CBS chairman and CEO, to the Television Critics Association meeting here this week. Brolin's recent guest star role as a conservative Republican on The West Wing helped convince CBS and producers that Brolin was presidential material.

"He's sort of considered as the all-American boy. There's something about his stature," Moonves says.

Judy Davis (The Judy Garland Story) will play first lady Nancy Reagan in the film from movie producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (Chicago, Annie, The Music Man, Lucy, Martin and Lewis, The Beach Boys).

Ray of hope

Chances are 50-50 that Ray Romano and creator Phil Rosenthal will end Everybody Loves Raymond in May, Moonves says.

"Obviously, we hope this is not the final year of the show," Moonves says. "The rest of the cast is dying to come back ... so it's going to be my job to work on Phil and Ray for the next six months, and get them to stay another year. But I may not be successful," he says.

If Romano quits his $1.7-million per show job, CBS could do a spin-off with Emmy-winner Brad Garrett, or other characters, or move King of Queens to 9 p.m. Monday.

"We're prepared. We have alternatives," Moonves says. "If Raymond goes, we're going to be hurt a lot less than NBC when Friends goes off (in May)."

Start of 'Survivor'

CBS will launch the fall TV season with Survivor: Pearl Islands, now filming in Panama, on Sept. 18.

An all-star Survivor, with previous contestants, the eighth in the series, will be filmed in November and air in February sweeps, Moonves says. Participants will be announced in about a month.

"We're trying to keep that a secret," he says.

TV today

The Guardian (Simon Baker) has minors test a new satellite tracking device invented by his old college roommate (9 p.m., Channels 12, 7).

A pop star's father tries to seize control of her career on Judging Amy (10 p.m., Channels 12, 7).

Talk show guests

Regis and Kelly (9 a.m., Channel 9): Antonio Banderas

Wayne Brady (10 a.m., Channel 9): Halle Berry.
