Steve Lowery shot a 4-under 68 Saturday to take a five-stroke lead over Alex Cejka and John E. Morgan after the third round of the PGA Tour's B.C. Open at Endicott, N.Y.
Lowery, who has led each round, was at 20-under 196. Only 1987 winner Joey Sindelar has led all four rounds of the tournament.
LPGA TOUR: Ohio State product Meg Mallon birdied the last four holes for a 6-under-par 65 and a share of the third-round lead with Hee-Won Han in the Big Apple Classic in New Rochelle, N.Y.
Mallon and Han, who lost in a playoff to Gloria Park last year, had 11-under 202 totals on the Wykagyl Country Club course. Cindy Figg-Currier (73) was third, five back.
U.S. PUBLINX: Vanderbilt graduate Brandt Snedeker, 22, won the 78th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Galloway Township, N.J., posting a 10-and-9, matchplay victory over Dayton Rose.
Snedeker took a three-hole lead after the first 18-hole round, then started rolling. Riding crisp iron play and precision putting, he carded birdies on five of the next nine holes to end the scheduled 36-hole event after 27 holes.
JUNIOR PGA: Emma Cabrera-Bello of Maspalomas, Spain, collected her first United States victory, while Phillip Bryan of Mustang, Okla., cruised in the boys division at the Westfield Group (Ohio) Country Club.
CELEBRITY EVENT: Actor Jack Wagner had seven birdies in a 30-point round for a share of the lead with Steve Bartkowski in the American Century Celebrity event at Stateline, Nev. Wagner and Bartkowski had 51 points under the modified Stableford scoring system, with eagles worth six points, birdies three, pars one, bogeys zero and double bogeys minus-two. Rick Rhoden, seeking his sixth victory in the event, was third at 45.
