Summer basketball finals today

Bedgood's last shot hoists Stratus Group

Brent Bedgood had already missed one game-winning shot Saturday at Oak Hills High School when he received a pass at the top of the key with less than three seconds left in overtime.

Bedgood drove left, under the basket, and flipped a scoop shot up onto the rim. It bounced twice and fell through as the buzzer sounded, giving Stratus Group an 82-80 win against Stan Litz Law Office and a trip to the Deveroes Summer League finals at 7 tonight against Maaco-Blue Ash.

"I thought it would roll out," Bedgood, a 31-year-old guard, said. "Then I saw it roll to the side and drop in, like it was supposed to with a shooter's touch."

Three minutes before, Bedgood missed an 8-foot bank shot that would have given Stratus Group the win at the end of regulation, which finished in a 72-72 tie.

"Brent may have missed some shots, but he hit a big one when it counted," Stratus Group coach Wade Goins said.

Wade and his twin brother, Wyatt Goins, coach and play for Stratus Group.

Stan Litz's inside-game mastery mirrored Stratus Group's control of the perimeter.

Stratus Group tried to play physical down low, but University of Dayton big men Keith Waleskowski and Sean Finn were often too quick. Waleskowski finished with 30 points and Finn with 24.

Rodney Fields did a bulk of the scoring for Stratus Group, leading the team with 26 points. He had a crucial reverse layup with 49 seconds left in overtime that gave Stratus Group a 79-76 lead.

Maaco-Blue Ash defeated Cintas, 85-64, in the second semifinal Saturday, keeping its perfect record intact at 10-0 entering tonight's final. League MVP David Shelton scored 30 points in the win.

"We're about to go unbeaten through the whole thing," said Maaco-Blue Ash forward Eric Hicks, who plays for the University of Cincinnati.
