Stadler makes first win on over-50 tour a major
The Associated Press
Craig Stadler wasted little time in earning his first victory on the Champions Tour, shooting a 6-under 66 Sunday to win the Senior Players Championship in Dearborn, Mich.
Playing in only his fourth tournament on the over-50 tour, Stadler won the third of this year's five majors by three shots over Tom Kite, Jim Thorpe and Tom Watson at the TPC of Michigan.
Stadler, whose round included three consecutive birdies on the front nine, finished with a 72-hole total of 17-under 271. He took advantage of a hot putter to became the 17th winner in 18 Champions Tour events in 2003.
"I played pretty solid today," said Stadler, who turned 50 last month. "I had two good putting days in a row. It's been a while since I putted consistently well."
Stadler has already committed to play in the Kroger Classic Sept. 1-7 at the TPC at River's Bend.
PGA TOUR: Kenny Perry won at the Greater Milwaukee Open, his third win in four starts. Perry sank a three-foot birdie putt for a one-stroke victory over Steve Allan and Heath Slocum at the GMO.
Perry won the Colonial and Memorial tournaments and finished third at the U.S. Open before taking three weeks off leading up to the GMO at Brown Deer Park, where he shot a 4-under-par 66 Sunday for a 12-under 268 total.
LPGA CANADIAN OPEN: Beth Daniel birdied the final two holes in rainy conditions for a 4-under 68 and a one-stroke victory over Juli Inkster at Vancouver.
Daniel, 46, finished at 13-under 275 for her 33rd career title and first win since 1995.
The 23-year LPGA veteran made a three-foot birdie putt on the par-3 17th to tie Inkster, 43, at 12 under.
SCOTTISH OPEN: Ernie Els won by five strokes after shooting a 2-under 69 in Luss.
Els, tuning up to defend his British Open title this week at Royal St. George's, finished at 17-under 267. Darren Clarke and Phillip Price both shot 69 and were second at 272, while Gary Murphy had a 67 and was fourth at 274.
Phil Mickelson rounded off his week with a 68, highlighted by an eagle and three birdies on four straight holes on the back nine. He finished at 2 under for the tournament, sharing 35th place.
John Daly withdrew before the round with a wrist injury.
NATIONWIDE TOUR: Joe Ogilvie shot a final-round 1-under 71 to win The Reese's Cup Classic by three strokes and become the first double-winner on the Nationwide Tour this season.
Ogilvie, who spent the last four years on the PGA Tour, finished with a 10-under 274.
