Dr. John Cohen, a Cincinnati Eye Institute physician who specializes in glaucoma and cataracts, recently returned from Bulgaria, where he performed eye surgery on citizens and lectured to doctors.
Cohen had traveled to Trinidad, Costa Rica, India, Yugoslavia and China, twice, before his trip to Bulgaria.
He volunteers with a group called Orbis International, which includes doctors whose mission is to perform eye surgeries to restore or improve sight. They also teach sight-saving skills to doctors and other health professionals.
"I worked with local doctors there," said Cohen, of Wyoming. "We saw 30 patients one day and did two eye surgeries."
They typically fly to these countries in a converted DC-10 which is used as an eye hospital.
Though the plane was not used on this trip, Cohen plans to give public tours of the plane at the Dayton Air Show July 19 at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
"The plane is equipped with a state-of-art audio visual system," Cohen said. "It has 54 videos, eight microphones and 16 cameras."
