NEWPORT - Tuesday's release of a search warrant used to seize a Baja Forty Outlaw speedboat shed new light on the investigation of a boat crash that injured six people on the Ohio River last month.
The warrant says investigators took 34 pieces of evidence from the 40-foot speedboat, including 13 scrapings from its fiberglass hull.
Also taken were swabs of what appeared to be blood from the front passenger seat armrest and rear passenger side seat, the boat's three propellers and its steering wheel.
Campbell County Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Michelle Snodgrass said the evidence was hand-delivered to the Kentucky state crime lab in Frankfort. She said lab officials would place a priority on the testing, a process that normally takes six to eight months.
The speedboat - named "Snap Decision" - was seized earlier this month. Witnesses said it matched the description of a boat involved in a June 27 hit-and-run wreck near the Queen City Riverboat landing in Dayton, Ky.
Glenn Colann, 54, of Gahanna, a suburb of Columbus, owns the boat and has been named a suspect. He has not been charged. Colann's lawyer, Jim Morgan of Newport, said there is nothing in the search warrant that directly ties his client to the crash.
"Mr. Colann was not involved in this crash," Morgan said. "That is our stance."
An affidavit in support of the search warrant contains details not previously released by police.
A witness, not identified in the affidavit, claims to have been on the boat with Colann during the crash. The witness told police, according to the affidavit, that the boat hit "an unknown object."
