Ohio Moments
Astronaut first to log 1,000-plus pilot hours
Astronaut Terence T. Henricks was born June 5, 1952, in Bryan, Ohio.
He graduated from Woodmore High School in Elmore, Ohio, in 1970, then earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1974. He earned a master's degree in public administration from Golden Gate University in 1982.
Henricks attended the Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base, where he logged more than 6,000 hours of flight time in more than 30 types of aircraft and made 747 parachute jumps.
After becoming an astronaut in 1986, he commanded two shuttle flights and piloted two others. He was the first person to log more than 1,000 hours as a space shuttle pilot/commander. He also was part of the all-Ohio crew launched aboard Discovery in 1995. Henricks retired to pursue a business career in 1997.
