Give Bloody Marys a shot

By Rebecca Goodman
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Before you reach for a beer or red wine to go with that burger, consider a Bloody Mary instead. According to legend, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis loved a Bloody Mary with her burger, so the concept is very '60s-retro.

I decided to give the combination a shot at Hamburger Mary's (911 Vine St.), an eclectic downtown joint where burgers and Bloody Marys are specialties. The grill plates a half-pound, flame-broiled burger topped with lettuce and tomato. Served in a chilled mug, the house Bloody Mary is made from a "knock your socks off" secret recipe. Pepper-flavored vodka kicks it up a notch.

At Sunday brunch, you can customize your cocktail at a Bloody Mary bar. Patrons may add an assortment of condiments, including three hot sauces, capers, wasabi, and olives. The drink costs $4.95-$5.50, depending on the vodka. (Hamburger Mary's carries 27 brands.)

If you're ready to pair a bloody with your best burger like Jackie O., here's the restaurant's no-longer-secret recipe.

Hamburger Mary's Bloody Mary

3 cups V-8 Juice

30 dashes Worcestershire sauce

2 teaspoons celery salt

1 heaping teaspoon horseradish

Black and white pepper to taste

Absolut Pepper Vodka

Mix all ingredients in pitcher. Taste and adjust seasonings. Pour 11/2 ounces vodka into 4 chilled mugs filled with ice. Add mix to each mug, stir and garnish. Makes 4 drinks.
