Today's money tip
When you receive taxable dividends that are reinvested in your mutual fund or stock, your cost basis in that investment is increased by the amount of the dividend. The amount of tax paid on the dividends does not affect the basis calculation. Regardless of whether the dividend is ordinary or a capital gain, the entire amount of the dividend will increase your basis if it is used to buy additional shares of stock.

Today's career tip
You may not want to hear what employees have to say but your company better foster a climate where free-speaking is the norm or else there will be consequences, says Leslie A. Perlow, author of When You Say Yes But Mean No. "When we are in a relationship in which we don't feel comfortable speaking up, we end up feeling anxiety and negative emotion, and it's hard to be motivated as a result," the author contends. "This is highly costly for individuals and organizations."

TODAY'S COMPANY: MARIEMONT FLORIST
BLOOMING: Self-taught floral designer Terry Rye opened her shop on Wooster Pike in 1980. Over the years, she has grown her business by focusing more on professional floral arrangement services and delivery, phasing out non-floral gift items.
DO-IT-YOURSELF: In 2001, Rye opened a floral design studio where individuals and groups can learn about floral design and create their own arrangements. The studio is also available for children's birthday parties and other special events. Brides-to-be and their attendants can visit the studio to make up their bouquets and other floral accent pieces.
SHARING SECRETS: Rye has also written two books: "Creative Wedding Florals You Can Make" and "Creative Wedding Keepsakes You Can Make." The books, published by Better Way Books, a division of F&W Publishing, are available through amazon.com and the store's web site, www.mariemontflorist.com.
