You Guys salon hopes to be 'oasis for men'

Donna and Greg Dougherty thought about what would make men comfortable in a salon and put it all together in You Guys, 12082 B Montgomery Road (near Fields Ertel). There's a big-screen TV in the reception area, an LCD TV at each station, Bose surround-sound, a hot towel, hot stone neck and temple massage with every haircut and online booking. Donna, with 22 years as a barber/stylist, "felt men needed a place of their own where they'd feel comfortable getting manicures, pedicures, hair coloring, waxing and massages. A typical guy wouldn't be comfortable getting that service in a mixed salon," says Greg. Opening in February, they targeted execs but found a wider customer base. Concours d'Elegance fashions: The Ault Park event Sunday featuring the 50th birthday of the sleek Corvette will also spotlight elegant clothes at the Coldwater Creek Fashion Show, 1:30 p.m. in the pavilion. The show will spotlight clothes from the Rookwood Commons (Norwood) shop, as well as hair styled by Salon XXII in Walnut Hills at Edgecliff Towers. The Arthritis Foundation is the sponsor. Low-rise letters: Victoria's Secret has the solution for the intended or inadvertent thong show resulting from low-rise pants. Its mesh boy-short panties, V-strings and bikini panties with a keyhole back are available with little block beads that spell out a name or message across the keyhole top. JCPenney applause: Accessories magazine, which tracks the retail market of purses, jewelry and nonclothing business across the country, named the 1,049-store chain Retailer of the Year in its June issue. The chain's "renewed focus and aggressive fashion stance" and "initiative to expand and upgrade its women's accessories business" were cited as the main reasons. For customers, that translates to finding the latest trends in jewelry, etc., sooner than at its competitors' stores and seeing circulars, fliers and models in Penney ads decked out in more "trend-right" accessories.

Bridal gown tips: After the big day, brides may be tempted to hang the gown in the closet and deal with it later. That would be a mistake. The longer the stains and soil are left on the dress, the greater the probability they will become permanent. The Whirlpool Institute of Fabric Science has this advice: Have the gown cleaned within a few weeks of the nuptials; take it to a dry cleaner trained in cleaning and preparing gowns for storage; don't store it in a plastic bag (fumes can discolor and destroy fabrics); wrap in acid-free white tissue, stuffing bodices and curved areas; if you use an acid-free cardboard box, change it every three to five years because even absorbent cardboard can re-acidify over time; store in a cool dry place, avoiding damp basements and hot attics. Super jeans: Levi's is putting a little muscle in its ultra-baggy hip-hop Silvertab jeans with a little help from DuPont. It's added Kevlar, best-known for being used in bullet-resistant vests, which makes the jeans more durable and one-third the weight of regular jeans, but with the same feel. Levi's is the first company to incorporate the boosted fiber into its products. $62-$92.
