Ky. Memorial Day activities

ALEXANDRIA - The 43rd Alexandria Memorial Day Parade will be 2 p.m. Sunday, beginning at the Campbell County Middle School at 8000 Alexandria Pike.

The parade will continue south on Washington Street, then west on Main Street. The parade turns onto Spillman Drive where it will finish at V.F.W. Post 3205 at 8261 Alexandria Pike.

The parade is sponsored by the Campbell County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3205 in Alexandria and by the group's ladies auxiliary.

The grand marshal will be Byron Nelson, a life-member of V.F.W. Post 3205 who was a prisoner of war captured by the Germans during World War II.

After the parade, a memorial service will be at the veterans' monument at V.F.W. Post 3205. U.S. Rep. Ken Lucas will speak at the memorial service.

BELLEVUE-DAYTON - 74th Memorial Day Parade begins Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the Veterans Monument in Dayton at Sixth and Main streets. The parade continues west on Sixth Street through Dayton, then continues west on Fairfield Avenue through Bellevue, and ends at the Bellevue Vets at 24 Fairfield Ave.

EDGEWOOD - Ceremonies for Memorial Day begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Freedom Park at Dudley Road and Thomas More Parkway. The ceremonies are expected to last around 30 minutes.

The keynote speaker will be Rep. Jon Draud, R-Crestview Hills.

The "What Freedom Means to Me" contest winners will be announced during the ceremony.

In addition to performing a flag disposal ceremony, Boy Scout Troop 779 will be available starting at 9:30 a.m. to collect tattered flags.

FORT MITCHELL - Highland Cemetery will host a Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday near the chapel in the cemetery at 2167 Dixie Highway.

Guest speaker will be retired Army Reserve Col. William J. Deupree III, a resident of Park Hills.

Both American Legion Post 203 in Covington and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6095 in Covington will be present at the ceremony, which will last 30-45 minutes. The ladies auxiliary for both groups will also be at the ceremony.

The Beechwood High School band will perform, in addition to the playing of bagpipes by Fort Mitchell resident Kyle Driscoll.

FORT WRIGHT - Memorial Day will be observed at the Fort Wright Veterans' Memorial on the front lawn of the city building at 409 Kyles Lane at 10 a.m. Monday.

The guest speaker will be Bert Wall, an Army veteran who served as a member of the Army's Presidential Honor Guard in Washington during the administrations of Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy.

PARK HILLS - Parade starts at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the parking lot of Northern Kentucky University's Covington campus at 1401 Dixie Highway.

The parade route continues to Mount Allen Road and concludes at the intersection of Amsterdam Road and Park Drive.

The grand marshal will be Park Hills resident Thomas Beechem, an Army veteran who has been active in the community as a member and former president of the Holy Name Society at St. Agnes Church.
